Why I Joined Jumprope and Why Creators Will Love It

I’m sure by this point you’ve all seen my YouTube video where I revealed that I would be trading in freelance life for a 9-5 job at a tech startup called Jumprope, but I wanted to chat a bit more about it on the blog because, well, this is really where it all began over seven (!) years ago. It was great to have a stream of consciousness and fill you in on more of my personal life too in the video, but I thought it might be helpful to fill in some gaps and answer some more specific questions about what Jumprope is, what my role is, and why it’s a great tool for creators to use.

Why Jumprope?

So, first of all, what is Jumprope? Jumprope is the place to create and discover how-to videos and tutorials. There are two things that I think make the app really standout compared to other video editors. First, you can create a professional looking video in a fraction of the time that it would take you to edit that video on a traditional software like iMovie using in-app tools to edit speed, music, fonts, voiceover, transitions, colors, and more. Creators can really customize their content and make it feel on-brand for them. Second, the app creates exports for your content sized perfectly to fit Pinterest, YouTube, stories, IGTV, and even embed on your website (as I’ve done here) so there’s no additional re-sizing, cropping, or editing on your end and you can share your content across multiple platforms.

Have you ever filmed a video for Instagram and then realized it would be better suited for YouTube? Now you don’t have to go back and re-film the video in a horizontal format. It’s already been made for you and all you have to do is download it from the app. It’s pretty insane actually.

Who is Jumprope for?

Jumprope is for the creator who doesn’t want to allocate a lot of their time or money towards producing video content but wants to be involved in video creation and who has expertise in a specific area that they want to teach to others.

What brought me to Jumprope and what is my job?

After getting laid off from two different magazines, I decided to stay freelance full-time. The first six months were super rocky but I eventually hit a stride and felt really comfortable with my routine, the projects I was working on, and the money I was earning. I was fortunate enough while freelancing to have lots of time to devote to content creation for this blog, my YouTube channel, and my Instagram account and got to work with lots of amazing brands. A friend of mine from college reached out to me about this role and when I read the job description, my mind was literally blown. It aligned so clearly with what I wanted to do as a freelancer (help make life easier for content creators) but it would allow me to do it on a larger scale and at a really interesting company.

My role at Jumprope is Beauty Content Director, which means I oversee the beauty category on the app. I do lots of meetings with creators to get feedback from them about what they like about the app, I help pitch news outlets (one of my favorite things!!) for features and other collaborations with editors, and I also will work with brands to see if Jumprope can help them with their content needs. I’ll also help curate our Instagram feed, engage our community through events and other programs, and educate creators about best practices for the app to make standout content.

How does Jumprope help creators?

It saves time. Like, sooo much time. As someone who has been uploading two YouTube videos a week every week for the past year, I can tell you it takes a LOT of work. This is a great way to produce more content in less time.

You don’t need previous editing experience or expensive software to create a video on Jumprope. When I first started my YouTube channel, the biggest thing holding me back was my production quality. I felt confident in the content of my videos and in my on-camera persona but lighting, sound, transitions, and editing software were not my strong points. If I had Jumprope back then, I would have started my channel so much earlier

It’s customizable and you can choose colors and fonts that best represent your aesthetic so any content you create and share looks and feels on-brand

It allows so much flexibility so if you prefer to film your content on a camera and upload it to the app you can but you can also film, edit and export all on your phone. Plus, since it generates exports for every platform you can film first and choose where you’ll share later. Most creators share their content across multiple platforms.

What categories are the most popular?

Right now our four largest categories are beauty, food, fitness, and crafts + DIY. There’s also drinks, woodworking, fashion, wellness, travel, music, pets, and more. There’s definitely a category on the app that will fit your interests.

How long does it take to create a video?

This will probably depend on your previous editing experience but for me, someone who has been creating YouTube and Instagram video content for about two years now I can honestly put together a video in about 15 minutes on Jumprope. If you’ve never created one before I’d maybe set aside an hour or so to play around with the app and try to make a video.

Is there anything else I should know before I create a video on Jumprope?

Sure! The best tutorials usually have between 5-12 steps so map out what you want to talk about in your head or on a piece of paper. Take advantage of in-app features like voiceover and speed to create content that looks and feels professional. I also created a best practices video for beauty content on the Jumprope account which you can watch here. Last thing I wanted to show you is the same video that I uploaded to my IGTV and to my YouTube channel shown below so you can see the app in action.
