Our Proposal Story: From How We Met to How He Asked

How we met

I had been living in New York City right after graduating college and was working my first job as an editorial assistant at a magazine when I had some friends visit town for a girls’ night out.

We got burgers for dinner in the East Village but our main destination was Niagara on 7th and Avenue A for some cheap beers and dancing to 80’s music.

While we were at the bar, this super cute guy made his way over to our group and asked me to dance.

He was tall with dirty blonde hair and green eyes, smiling and singing along as we danced to ABBA and Madonna.

However, it was girls’ night so when my friends were ready to head out to the next spot I went with them, but not without getting the guy’s phone number.

We texted a bit the next day and he ended up asking me out to go to a wine bar in his neighborhood (and even called me the day before to confirm!)

We ended up talking for hours on our first date and were still at it even as the restaurant workers were starting to put chairs on top of tables and sweep the floors.

The rest is history! (Photos from our first year of dating)

How he asked

In April of 2022, we celebrated our 5-year anniversary of dating and I can admit that around this time I had started to wonder when the question might be dropped.

We had been living together for 3 years and for some reason I just wasn’t thinking it would happen any sooner than late 2022 or even 2023.

On an overcast May day, we headed out to Central Park to meet Andrew’s sister, brother-in-law, and niece and nephew for what I thought was a trip to the Museum of Natural History and a day in the park.

We made a picnic with blankets and ate our sandwiches, and we still had an hour before our ticket time at the museum.

We wandered past Sheep’s Meadow, and Bethesda Terrace, and finally arrived at the Bow Bridge, one of my favorite spots in the park.

His sister asked me to take a picture of them on the bridge and then offered to take one of Andrew and me.

We took the picture and as I started to step away Andrew pulled me back, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him!

I was SO shocked and initially said “what???” and started tearing up.

Then I saw the ring and was even more overwhelmed.

I finally said “yes!” and realized his sister and brother-in-law had been taking photos of the whole thing.

He also had arranged for both of our families to meet up at his parent’s house where we got to celebrate further.

I truly couldn’t have asked for a nicer moment and the fact that he was able to surprise me is truly impressive since I’m a big planner and therefore a hard person to surprise.

We’re getting married this fall in NYC and I am so excited for our future together!
