17 Cute Poses To Try For Instagram

When I first started my fashion blog in 2012 I constantly found myself struggling with how to pose for photos. I kept saying repeatedly “I wish I could just do the styling and have someone else model for me.” I figured that way I could still put together outfits without needing to feel awkward in front of the camera. But eight years on, I’ve gotten more comfortable in front of the camera and have learned a thing or two that I can share with you.

Today I’m sharing 17 cute poses for Instagram to try the next time you go out to take photos. I have found that researching poses for photos ahead of time makes me a lot more confident going into a photo shoot.

I’ll even practice some of them in front of the mirror before I head out to see if they look the way I pictured they would or if the outfit I’m wearing prompts me to change the poses slightly.

1. Turn to the side and use your arms to create two triangles

This is a laid back pose that is helpful for showing an outfit with lots of layers like this thicker winter jacket and the sequin slip dress.

2. Sit and cross your legs and lean your arm on the top one

This is a great one if you’re shooting in a park and can find a bench to sit on. This one is across from Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.

3. Twirl in front of the camera

I love doing this because you often get unexpected shots that aren’t 100% planned.

4. Hold a magazine or newspaper

Whether you’re sitting at a cafe or standing on the sidewalk, newspapers and magazines make great props for photo shoots.

5. Walk quickly towards the camera

To show off an outfit you can walk quickly towards the camera and have your photographer shoot in burst mode (available on most phones too!)

6. Sit on the curb

To literally change your vantage point, sit on the side of the curb for an unexpected angle.

7. Get creative with props and products

I loved the clear window of this eyeshadow from Wet N Wild and used it to create an interesting silhouette with my arms and frame my eye for this beauty campaign.

8. Pick up the corner of a dress or skirt

To add some natural movement to a photo without going overboard, touching your clothes is a great way to do this.

9. Whip your hair around and smile!

Another move that will guarantee fun shots!

10. Kick one leg out and look behind you

To add more interest to a typical standing pose I find that this one works well.

11. Sit on a bench and bend one knee up

Creating triangles with your knees and arms creates an interesting visual in photos.

12. Take off your sunglasses

Removing an accessory or putting one on is another natural way to add movement to photos.

13. Walk sideways in front of the camera

Now that you’ve tried walking directly towards the camera, try walking sideways with big strides.

14. Pick up your hair and drop it to capture movement

This one may take a few tries to get right but when you do, it’s magic!

15. Step off of a curb (but look both ways!)

Seriously, look both ways! Especially in New York.

16. Lean against a wall, bar, or table

An easy way to set up a shot indoors.

17. Hold a bag in front of you with both hands

This is one of my personal favorites when I don't know what to do for a pose. A bag with a top handle works perfectly for this.

If you want even more posing tips my friend Emma is the queen of posing (check out her Instagram and TikTok for tons of tips) and read her blog post about how to pose with food. I hope this gave you some inspiration if you’re a fashion blogger and looking for cute pose ideas for your next shoot.
